About us
Housed in Wu
lab
in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School
(HMS), we believe that examining the use of
genetic
information in the public domain is an integral part of our work. Ting
Wu and Dana Waring are at HMS, Jack Bateman is at Bowdoin College,
and Jim Morris is at
Brandeis University.
Our outreach program helps students and the general public assess the choices offered by new advances in biotechnology, and to think critically about the benefits and risks of personal genetics for themselves, their families, and society. We also develop and share curricular materials designed for high school and college level students.
Our aim is to contribute to the growing body of work exploring the new ethical, legal, and social issues (often referred to as “ELSI”) around personal genome sequencing. This site is designed to give an overview of the ELSI terrain related to personal genetics, and to provide general information for people considering personal genome sequencing.
